Being in Miami, travel to the Caribbean and Central America is relatively cheap and easy. I made a last-minute decision to spend a weekend in Trinidad. Here is one of the birds that I found.

I was following some manakins when I flushed this Blue-crowned Motmot (kingfisher relative). Motmots love to sit motionless for long periods. He picked a lovely little spot to perch and by contorting myself and my tripod around some trees I was able to capture a few images. The fill flash that I added seemed just right to bring out his wonderful colors. Check out that amazing racket tail too! Motmots are definitely a group of my favorite birds.

7D + 500mm + 1.4x TC at 1/25 second!!

Wow, with a 500mm plus a 1.4x, and onyl 1/25.... this is a surprisingly sharp photo! Great catch!

It surprised me too...I didn't think I could pull it off as I worked to view the bird through a tiny window in the forest.
