Ghost by juddpatterson Ghost by juddpatterson
The Ghost Orchid is an endangered plant found only in the shadowy depths of swamps in south Florida and Cuba. It's not an easy plant to find. It lives a life without leaves...relying instead on photosynthetic roots anchored to the side of a tree (see the background-right in this image). For a few weeks during the rainy season it sends out a stalk with a beautiful white flower. I felt lucky to view several of these rare orchids in June.

ugh, jealous! ~PhotonPhreak and I were hoping to make it to Corkscrew Swamp sanctuary when their "Super Ghost" was blooming, they said this year's bloom yielded 20 flowers I think. Never got the chance to go though :( Nice capture though

:( we've lost or endangered a lot of beautiful fly traps and other flowers with the drainage of the everglades. It is such a privilege to see one of these, I bet you were so excited!

They did play a role in the book and film...thanks for mentioning that detail! They are real, but unfortunately they are not very common. I hope they survive.

It was a real treat to finally see this plant in the wild. I was lucky enough to accompany a botanist out into a remote area of Big Cypress for this photograph. Unfortunately poaching is still very common (I know of several Ghost Orchids with trail cameras aimed at them try and catch poachers). The trickiest part is actually to find still enough conditions for photography...that little white flower sure does bounce around at even the slightest hint of a breeze. :)

So it has become a reality....cameras in the wilderness.

What is this world coming to.

So jealous. It's unwarranted though, because I haven't spent a lot of time looking.
