I found this beautiful nest cavity a couple months back and was really excited to watch the Pileated Woodpeckers raise a family. For two weeks I watched the adults incubate, and then right before the young were to hatch a big wind storm knocked the entire tree to the ground! It was tough to see nest split in two and nothing inside...sure hope both the adults survived the storm.

omg omg.. you g0t him!! Aren`t they awesome looking birds! I saw one about 8 yrs ago, when we just moved in. I was talking to our elderly neighbour, and something HUGE flew over our heads in the tree. And sat there. When I went in to get the camera as proof of there being one such big bird, of course it flew off. I`ve been on the look-out ever since. Never seen one again. But this is my dream bird to get a photograph of.
Now that I`ve finally got my Bluejays, and cardinals up close.
