Pileated Woodpecker by juddpatterson Pileated Woodpecker by juddpatterson
Big and noisy, the Pileated Woodpecker is really a treat to view. I spotted this male in Banff National Park in Alberta. I really wasn't expecting this species up there, but I was thrilled! He and his partner were absolutely demolishing a dead tree to find food for their three chicks.

300mm f/4

Great shot, I chased 2 of these through the woods for 45 minutes last week and couldn't sneak close enough for a clear shot... oh well, at least I know where they are hanging out. :D

Wonderful shot. I only know of one reliable place to spot them in this area, and I've been trying to get a decent photo for over a year, but they always fly away!
